A ranked list answers only one question: what is popular right now. A map answers the one people actually arrive with, which is where do I go for this. TheAppsCity is built around that second question, so the structure is districts and addresses rather than positions one through fifty.
Listings are placed by what the software is for. Developer and rating sit on every line so you can compare neighbours without opening each one, and no position on this map is for sale.
The whole directory is generated ahead of time as static pages. No client side framework, no tracking script, no ad frame reserving space. A page here weighs less than most sites spend on fonts.
Cities grow by word of mouth and so does this one. If you know software that deserves an address here, the contact page takes about a minute.
Repackaged installers, cracked premium unlocks, and anything trading on a name that is not its own. A directory that lists those is not a directory, it is a hazard.
TheAppsCity is kept by a small group who spend more time in app listings than is entirely healthy, and who got tired of catalogues that all looked like the same top ten.
Districts get redrawn when they stop making sense. Entries that go dark are removed rather than left standing.
A good map does not tell you where to go. It tells you what is there.
