Google Messages

Everyday texting, with more room to communicate

Google Messages is Google’s communication app for sending texts, photos, videos and group messages from an Android phone. It suits people who want a familiar messaging tool but also need richer conversations than basic SMS and MMS can provide. The app supports RCS chats where available, adding features such as high-quality media sharing, typing indicators and more flexible group conversations.

Useful features for one-to-one and group chats

• Share high-resolution photos and videos when RCS is available.
• See when another person is typing in supported conversations.
• Continue group chats with compatible contacts, including iPhone users where RCS interoperability is supported.
• Personalise conversations with options such as chat bubble colours and selfie GIFs.

Privacy and helpful message tools

Google Messages includes spam protection to help identify unwanted messages. Eligible chats between Google Messages users can also use end-to-end encryption, protecting messages and attachments so they are intended only for the people in the conversation. Some users may also see Magic Compose and other AI-assisted features for drafting replies.

A widely used Google communication app

Developed by Google LLC, the app sits in the Communication category and has more than 5 billion installs. Its average rating is about 4.58 out of 5 from nearly 39.9 million reviews. Google Messages can also be used on compatible tablets, computers and Wear OS devices, helping conversations follow you beyond the phone.

RCS support and individual features depend on the region, carrier, device and data plan. Encryption and some newer tools may apply only to particular conversations or accounts.
